Multiple projects related to indicator bacteria in receiving waters, their reliability as indicators of human health risk, and control strategies

Orange County, CA

Flow Science has provided a comprehensive review of available indicator bacteria data in receiving waters in southern California. These data demonstrate that bacteria concentrations are almost uniformly very high in storm flows, and that bacteria concentrations in runoff from undeveloped coastal watersheds are comparable to concentrations in developed coastal watersheds. This work has also provided a review of available literature on epidemiological studies evaluating the human health impacts of exposure to indicator bacteria (and associated pathogens); a review literature on non-human sources of indicator bacteria, which include wildlife (especially birds), regrowth in the environment, and sediments; and an assessment of potential control strategies.
