Twin Oaks Reservoir Flow Modeling

Vallecitos Water District

San Diego County, CA

Using Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Flow Science performed a flow analysis of the Twin Oaks Reservoir in San Diego County, California. The storage facility is a 384-foot diameter round tank with a total volume of 33 million gallons. For the initially proposed configuration, the analysis revealed that a large recirculation zone exists in the center of the tank. Such “dead zones” lead to a reduction in quality of the water and increases the risk of microbial contamination and regulatory problems.

Flow Science evaluated several different inlet/outlet configurations and the strategic placement of baffles in the tank to produce a more desirable flow pattern and residence time distribution.
